Mourning is often described as a sentiment expressing sorrow; here in Pakistan it means more bloodshed. With a troubling underlying meaning to the expression of “mourning” it has resulted in the loss of more than 9 innocent lives, injuring a dozen others with the burning of 47 vehicles all reduced to ashes. All this while when the Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri thanked Altaf Hussain for his appeal to people to show patience.

What’s more confusing is after all the disruption, the MQM parliamentary leader Haider Abbas Rizvi staged a walkout in the National Assembly by stating “We will not sit in Parliament today until the Government brings the culprits to justice,” If the walkout was a protest to the loss of lives of their party workers, then why was the loss of innocent victims mostly being rickshaw drivers, shopkeepers and passers-by conveniently omitted? Who takes responsibility for them?

Other than the loss of lives, public transport, CNG pumps and businesses across the city came to a halt. A wave of terror engulfed the city when educational institutions sent home kids, and those leaving early for work oblivious to the situation experienced traumatic chaos and a state of upheaval on the streets.

Was this really a peaceful protest? Will the affected families ever find peace, knowing they had nothing to do with the loss of party workers? Who would appease them? What’s frightening is how would they react back? Would this break into a civil war?

How many laborers dependent on their daily wages slept hungry last night? Who silenced the cries of their children?

Is there any sound and logical reasoning to a protest that results in more chaos and loss of completely innocent lives? How are these so called peaceful mourning?

Would Karachi ever be peaceful again? Would this blood war ever end?
