Shehla’s political career began with the Peoples Students Federation (PSF) at the University of Karachi in 1986. She became the PSF girls wing joint secretary at KU and worked at KU and other colleges till 1988 when she was elected the joint secretary of the PPP ladies wing Karachi.

In 1997, she moved to Islamabad and continued her political work in Wah Cantt and Rawalpindi.

She came back to Karachi in 2000 and by 2005 became the general secretary of the PPP ladies wing Karachi division. She was elected as member of Provincial Assembly of Sindh in the Elections held in year 2008 on the reserved seat from the platform of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian. The same year she was elected un-opposed as Deputy Speaker, Provincial Assembly of Sindh, She is also Vice President, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Sindh Branch.
